Finally, an opportunity to don that Christmas sweater that you obviously can't throw out, but you can't bear to wear either.

Whistler council is proclaiming Friday, Dec. 19 Ugly Christmas Sweater Day.

The proclamation comes at the request of the Now That's Ugly Society, which has a mission to breath new life into old ugly sweaters and raise money for the Children's Wish Foundation too. Its goal is to raise $100,000 across Canada this year.

Mayor Nancy Wilhelm-Morden is on the hunt now for an ugly sweater.

"I'll go down to the Re-Use It Centre," she said. "I'm sure they've got lots of ugly sweaters down there. There may be some nice ones down there, too, actually!"

Every year the Now That's Ugly Society celebrates Ugly Sweater Day by throwing the Ugly Christmas Sweater Party at the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver. This year the party will take place on Friday, Dec. 19. Tickets are $40.

In recent years, it has launched the Ugly Christmas Sweater Dash.

This year that untimed five-kilometre run will take place on Saturday, Dec. 13, leaving from Olympic Village Square at Southeast False Creek in Vancouver. Registration is $45.

Since 2002, the society has donated $100,000 to various charities and the funds raised last year were enough to grant two wishes to the Children's Wish Foundation.

Locals can get involved in fundraising too by ordering a Captains Kit for your office, team, school, friends or family.
