Whistler riders strong in B.C. Snowboard championships

The B.C. Snowboard Association held its annual B.C. Snowboard Championships at Big White last weekend, the final event in the Ripzone Provincial Snowboard Series.

The B.C. Snowboard Association held its annual B.C. Snowboard Championships at Big White last weekend, the final event in the Ripzone Provincial Snowboard Series.

Only a handful of Whistler athletes took part, but two local athletes did finish in the top three in the overall series standings.

In the last slopestyle of the season, Jessica Kimura of Vernon topped Kelowna’s Kelsey Borsa in the women’s event. Tim Dopko of Kelowna won the men’s event, followed by Vernon’s Dustin O’Ferrall and Dave Chamberlain of Thunder Bay, Ontario.

In the halfpipe, Kumra won the women’s event, followed by Whistler’s Valerie Legere who rides for Spy, Clive and Pacific Boarder.

The men’s competition went to Levi Froese who indicated that he was from "My Truck" in his registration form. Dustin O’Ferrall was second and David Schettini of Kamloops, a member of the national development team, was third.

In the snowboard cross, Jessica Kimura won her third gold of the weekend, edging out Jamie Martindale of Cranbrook, Natasha McCormick of Kelowna and Whistler’s Kerry Martin in the final heat.

The men’s competition went to Derek Wintermans of Port Coquitlam, followed by Brad Tetreau and Carl Cowtan of Kamloops. Whistler’s Dave Saskolinsky was 11 th .

In the overall standings, Valerie Legere was second in the halfpipe behind Jessica Kimura and ahead of Spender O’Brien of Courtney.

Chris Astofooroff of Grand Forks was first in the men’s halfpipe, followed by Dave Schettini and Levi Froese.

Kimura also led in the snowboard cross standings, followed by Kerry Martin and Natasha McCormick. Derek Wintermans placed first for the men, followed by Whistler’s Adam Livingston and Matthew Tinnicliffe of Gananoque, Ontario.
