Dozens of Whistler riders took part in Cycling B.C.-sanctioned mountain bike events this year, earning points in each race towards overall series standings in cross-country and downhill.
The overall awards were handed out last weekend, and as in past years Whistler riders finished top-three in numerous categories.
From Team Whistler, three athletes placed first overall in their respective categories.
Trevor Hopkins was first in men’s Master Expert 30 to 39, Jennifer Tabbernor was first in women’s Master Expert 30 to 39, and Bob Allison was first overall in men’s Master Expert 40 to 49.
Mike Charuk finished second in 40 to 49, and John Wong was 15 th .
Dustin Gordon placed 18 th in the Pro Elite men’s category.
Jesse Melamed was seventh in the Under 17 age group.
Squamish’s Megan Kindree topped the women’s Pro Elite category, followed closely by Whistler’s Lesley Clements, and Olympian Alison Sydor. Joanna Harrington placed 10 th overall with points in just one of six ranking races.
In men’s Pro Elite, national champion Rickey Federau of Abbotsford was first overall, followed by Craig Richey and Geoff Kabush. Squamish’s Neal Kindree placed fifth, and Whistler’s Matt Bodkin 21 st .
In Junior Male, Philip Cairns of Squamish was third overall.
Kerry-Anne Hamilton was fourth in Under 15 Female.
In Under 15 Male, Nick Geddes and Max Horner were second and third respectively.
In Under 17 Male, Sebastian Sleep of the Sunshine Coast edged out Whistler’s Tyler Allison. Sleep competed in five out of six events, while Allison only raced in three and finished ahead of Sleep each time.
Hayden Drygas of Squamish was fifth.
In the downhill rankings, Katrina Strand placed second in the Pro Elite Female category with points in just two races. Strand missed part of the season with injuries.
National champion Micayla Gatto of West Vancouver took part in three races. Claire Buchar was fifth overall.
In the Pro Elite Men, Jeff Beatty tied for fourth place overall, while Tyler Morland was ninth.
Miranda Miller of Squamish was the top Junior Female.
Chad Hendren was third in Master 30 to 39 Male.
Kerry-Anne Hamilton was the top Under 15 Female.
In Under 15 Male, Nick Geddes placed first overall, Max Horner was third, and Alexander Geddes seventh.
Tyler Allison was second in the Under 17 Male category with points in four races.
Ian Morrison was fifth, Alex Prochazka seventh, and Simon D’Artois 13 th .
As in past years, participation was as important as posting strong results, as the athletes who earned points in the most events often ranked ahead of the riders who topped provincial and national championship races.
