Whistler skiers dominate coast competition

Skiers from the Whistler Mountain Ski Club dominated the Merrill Lynch Coast Zone competitions at Mt. Washington last weekend, with both K2 (ages 11 and 12) and J1 (ages 13 and 14) racers participating. In the men’s giant slalom on Jan.

Skiers from the Whistler Mountain Ski Club dominated the Merrill Lynch Coast Zone competitions at Mt. Washington last weekend, with both K2 (ages 11 and 12) and J1 (ages 13 and 14) racers participating.

In the men’s giant slalom on Jan. 19, WMSC skier Matthew Holler took the gold with a combined time of 2:10.69 over two runs. Jeffrey Stahr of the Vancouver Ski Team was second. Darren Chaddock, another Whistler skier, was third.

Three other club skiers made the top 15; Conrad Pridy was fifth, Ryan Vaisler 11 th , and Ian McDonald 14 th .

The top two spots in the women’s GS went to Blair Morley and Carley Stobbart of the Vancouver Ski Team. Whistler’s Kendall Benow held onto third.

Seven other WMSC members cracked the top 15. Danielle Robson, Vanessa Disler, Alison Leighton, and Jillian McArthur were sixth through ninth, Shannon Smith was 12 th , Keely Coxon 13 th and Anna Ho 15 th .

In the second GS on the following day, Matt Holler had to settle for second behind Stahr. Jeff Hutton of the Grouse Mountain Tyees was third.

WMSC skiers took another six spots in the top 15, led by Darren Chaddock in fourth. Conrad Pridy was fifth, John Burke sixth, Ian McDonald ninth, Ryan Vaisler 11 th , and James McSkimming 15 th .

Once again the top two spots in the women’s race went to Vancouver, with Blair Morley and Rachel Nixon winning gold and silver. Kendall Benbow won her second bronze of the weekend, however, and seven other WMSC skiers landed in the top 15. Alison Leighton, Julia Murray, Taryn Ng, Danielle Robson, Jillian McArthur, and Katherine Cape were fifth through tenth, and Keely Coxon was 12 th .
