A group of Whistler high school students have been in Karuizawa, Japan, Whistler’s sister city, this past week as part of the first student exchange between the two towns.

The seven Whistler students and a chaperone left July 6 and spent seven days in Karuizawa.

Two months ago a delegation from Karuizawa visited Whistler.

Prior to the Whistler students leaving for Karuizawa, Whistler shipped 100 saplings to the Japanese town as a living reminder of the sister city relationship between the two mountain towns. The 20 hybrid spruces, 60 yellow cedars and 20 Douglas firs were donated to the municipality by Western Forest Products.

Karuizawa held a planting ceremony June 4 at their Olympic Park, where the curling was held during the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics. Trees were also planted at various municipal sites.
