Whistler Ultimate threw out the first disc of the season last night as the 2006 season got underway.
Until the end of June, WUDS – the Whistler Ultimate Disc Society – will be hosting beginners clinics every Wednesday night. No experience is necessary, just the ability to run and a pair of cleats.
The clinics will run from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the lower fields at Myrtle Philip, with more experienced players and Whistler Ultimate’s first certified coach (18 coaches around the province have been certified as Level 1 for the first time ever) guiding the action.
There will also be a pickup game for experienced players, which will be used to help pick a Whistler team for the upcoming B.C. Regional Championships July 8-9.
Specifically the team is looking for some speed, according to club director Tasso Lazaridis – experience is not as necessary.
"We have a core group that’s getting older. Our fastest runners aren’t as fast as they used to be, but we have strong arms and good accuracy – we need players to throw to. They don’t have to have experience, if they’re strong athletes we can turn them into players in a season. Just come out to drop-in night with a pair of cleats."
Following the clinics the Whistler Ultimate League will get underway. Through the summer Monday will be drop-in night and Wednesday will be league night.
The club needed to purchase insurance through the B.C. Disc Sports Society this year, so the cost will be $20 for clinics and $25 for the league.
