When Dr. Loridawn Gordon treats animals she uses a large medical toolkit, which includes not just conventional therapies, but also holistic ones.

And this weekend the Whistler vet will be at The Pet Lover Show in Abbotsford to deliver a seminar she calls Foundations of Health.

Gordon, an advocate of homeopathic care for pets said conventional pet medicine doesn't include much in the way of holistic care in an interview ahead of the Fraser Valley show.

"Just like our conventional medicine, it's designed to formulate a pill for every ill, but often the remedy for ailments can be anything from laughter, to fresh air, warmth, touch, blessings, poultice creams, tea, herbs, food and family," said Gordon.

She became interested in homeopathic medicine for animals after her own son developed digestive issues at the age of four. After going through the conventional medical system with little improvement she checked in with a naturopathic doctor who created a simple diet plan that made a significant change in just days.

Gordon was so inspired by the experience she put herself back in school to learn about homeopathy.

"I concentrate on diet as a big factor," she said.

Gordon also looks to the lifestyle of pet owners when finding solutions to wellness issues in their pets.

"We've kind of overlooked the good foundation principles of health, which are good nutrition, moderate exercise, good sleep patterns, happy thoughts and being part of a community, and this holistic medicine also applies to raising our pets," she said. "They live with us so they take on our stresses."

In the last two and a half years she has found homeopathic remedies work well dealing with mental issues like separation anxiety for pets.

Gordon's presentations at The Pet Lover show are scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 15 at 3:50 p.m. then she'll speak again at 10:30 a.m. the following day.
