Whistler volleyballer in U.S. nationals

Whistler’s Myrna Bush, who plays with the Whistler Whoosh women’s volleyball team, will be travelling to Atlanta next week to take part in the 2004 USA Volleyball National Championships.

More than 400 teams will be in the 10-day tournament, which runs from May 29 to June 5, playing on over 40 different courts.

Bush will be playing in the masters division against teams from Brazil, the U.S., and other Canadian teams. She was recruited to play in the tournament by Kent Williams, the retired coach of the University of Victoria women’s team.

She will be playing with two women from Saskatoon, a player from Victoria, and players from Lexington, South Carolina; Worton, Maryland and Northern California. The team is still short a middle player, but is looking to recruit a former player from the Canadian national team.

"It will be a great learning experience playing at this level," said Bush. "There are many former national and Olympic players that are still playing competitively after more than 30 years!

"I am hoping to improve my game personally, and am excited to have the opportunity to learn some great coaching skills for our high school junior girls volleyball team next season."

Bush thanked her Whistler Whoosh coach Bill Sirota for supporting her and encouraging her to head to Atlanta for the nationals.
