Ziptrek Ecotours has won a big prize at the 2012 BC Tourism & Hospitality Awards.

The Whistler company won the Employees First Award presented by go2, the human resources association for the B.C. tourism industry. The award recognizes a British Columbia tourism industry employer who has upheld high standards of excellence in human resources and people management practices.

"We're really excited," said Liza Walli, Ziptrek's director of human resources.

"This award really resonated with us because we use go2."

The Squamish Lilwat Cultural Centre also won big at the BC Tourism & Hospitality Awards, taking the Aboriginal BC Authenticity Award.

Both were presented at a gala dinner at the Vancouver Convention Centre on Nov. 6.

"For us to be chosen with 150 staff in Whistler is a pretty big deal. It speaks to who you are as an employer," Walli said.

This will only become more important in the next few years as competition for staff is expected to intensify due to a too few people in the B.C. workforce compared with vacancies, she added.
