Nobody could stop the aptly named Whistler Whoosh women’s volleyball team as they blew past their competition at the 2004 Tier II Provincials last weekend at Port Moody Secondary School. There were five teams competing for the title.

In the first round Whoosh beat a team from Simon Fraser University in two games before trading long games with Block Party to force a game three. Whoosh took the win.

With no break the Whoosh then faced a veteran team called Shadow, winning the first game and losing two close contests 25-23 and 15-13.

After a short break Whoosh played Unamus, the other Whistler team, and won in two games.

Whistler came out of the round robin tournament in second place, and were forced to play Shadow once again. After refuelling and fresh air Whoosh faced Shadow once again, again going to three games. This time Whistler came up with the win.

Whistler faced Block Party again in the finals, winning their first game 25-19. They lost the next game 25-23, forcing a third game.

The two teams traded points in the tie-breaker, but once again Whoosh came up with the win 15-12.

They were named the provincial champions in the post-game awards, and were presented with six badly needed team volleyballs.

Kat Frew, Mairi Smith and Veronika Voricek dominated the net with their power hits and blocks. Olga Archiadi led the team defensively, and Myrna Iaconetti and Kylie Spicer kept the team alive with their quick defence and strong sets. Jennifer Johnson and Carlee Howell also contributed good sets and strong serves.

The team thanks coach Bill Sirota for his help and motivation and Whistler Cable and Whooshnet for their sponsorship.
