The Whistler Whoosh women’s volleyball team came home with a first place finish at the annual Frosbite Rally tournament at the Harry Jerome Sports Centre in Burnaby on Jan. 17.

In the round robin, Whoosh split two games with Charlie’s Angels 17-25, 25-23, and lost two close games to Cobra’s 24-26, 23-25 to finish in third place in their pool. As a result they were moved down to the new Tier III bracket.

In the first round, Whoosh faced a tall and talented UBC Junior Varsity team, winning the match in three games to advance to the semi-finals.

There they faced another Whistler team, Unamus, and won that match in two games.

In the finals, Whoosh faced a team from the University College of the Fraser Valley. Sensing a win, the Whoosh came out hard and beat UCFV in two games 25-28, 25-26.

The Whoosh team took home first place T-shirts for the win, and hope to advance into the Tier I/II bracket in the next tournament.

Olga Archiadi and Myrna Laconetti were strong in the power positions, Katrina Few and Mairi Smith were a force hitting and blocking from the middle positions, and Jennifer Johnson, Sue Oliver and Carlee Howell contributed defense and offence everywhere else. The team would like to thank Whistler Cable and Whooshnet for their sponsorship and support.
