Women's only 'Betty and Veronica' race confirmed

Men in swimsuits volunteering at aid stations

Over the years Tony Horn has created some of the most iconic mountain bike events in Whistler, from the seven-year "Samurai of Singletrack" series to the Four Jacks and Four Queens events of the past two years.

This year he's got something new up his sleeve - a women's only bike race and ride that will include a morning race on Crank It Up in the Whistler Mountain Bike Park, and an afternoon ride on Whistler's west side - 15 km of trails including the Cemetary Climb, Whip Me Snip Me, Hydro Cut Road, Scotia Creek Climb, Beaver Lake, 99er, Mid Danimal, Danimal South, TLC Cut, Lower Sproatt (with Piece of Cake and A La Mode), Beaver Lake Trail, Danimal North, more Whip Me Snip Me, Mid-Flank, and ReBob. Most of the trails are blue with a few black sections, and there will be three aid stations from start-to-finish. The hardest trail on the list, 99er, will be getting a facelift over the summer to help it flow better.

Riding aside, girls will be divided at the start into two equal teams based on a few questions to determine whether you're a Betty or a Veronica. Riders will compete for themselves, as well as for their team using a point scoring system.

All proceeds from the event will go towards the Howe Sound Women's Centre and the ongoing work to open a Whistler Women's Centre for Fall 2011. For more information go to www.hwsc.com.

The race is capped at 180 riders and registration will open on June 15 at www.worca.com for $60. Riders can also purchase race jerseys for $25. If you don't have a pass to the Whistler Mountain Bike Park, a special pass will be available for $14 that will be valid from 10 a.m. to noon.

The after-party will take place at the Squamish Lil'wat Cultural Centre with a silent auction, DJ and other activities. Only riders and volunteers will be able to take part.

All volunteers for the race will be men, and according to Horn they are trying to work out a deal with SPEEDO to enhance the experience.
