Joyride 2002 organizers Chris Winter and Patrick Kaye knew what they were doing when they set the date for the second annual Joyride Bikercross. On July 3, the event is between World Cup mountain bike competitions at Mont Ste. Anne (June 29-30) and Grouse Mountain (July 6 and 7).

They put the word out to the athletes and are waiting to see if any of the downhill and cross-country World Cup riders will make an appearance. It’s almost guaranteed that the top pro riders in the area will be up against the best in world.

"That’s the beauty of Joyride," says Winter. "Anything can happen."

The qualifier runs from 3 to 6 p.m. in the bikercross course at the base of Whistler Mountain, and the heats start promptly at 6 p.m.

There are categories for junior, female, senior amateur male and senior pro male. The race is open to everybody, but only the fastest qualifiers will make it into the race.

You should also be prepared to face a crowd – last year more than 2,000 spectators came out to watch the action.

Joyride Bikercross 2002 is partners with Whistler-Blackcomb, Electronic Arts, Bike Magazine, Cove Bikes, Sombrio Clothing and www.nsmb.com. Companies and bike shops interested in demo space should contact Winter at winter1@direct.ca. More information is available at www.worldfreeride.com.
