Young golfers come close at Big Sky

Age and experience aren’t everything in the game of golf, as the scores from the Callaway Sea to Sky Junior Tour at Big Sky Golf and Country Club can attest.

Age and experience aren’t everything in the game of golf, as the scores from the Callaway Sea to Sky Junior Tour at Big Sky Golf and Country Club can attest. Despite temperatures just on the shady side of 40 degrees Celsius some 29 golfers from the Sea to Sky Corridor came out last week to golf in the second stop on tour.

Matt Hunter, a 15-year-old from Vancouver, shot a one-over-par 73 on the course to win the round and top spot in the 15 to 18 age category. He also managed to win closest to the pin honours.

Scott Sellers of Squamish, 17, had the next best round at 78. Marcel Pytlewski, 16, was third in the age category with a 78.

In fourth place overall was 15-year-old Gordan Yakura with a sub-80 79.

Seven other golfers would finish under 90, led by Mike Heenan, 15, with an 80. Heenan also won the 14 and over longest drive competition.

Daniel Brown, 17, shot an 81, and David Rose, 13, and Spencer Craig, 16, tied with 86 apiece. Rose was the top golfer in the 13 to 14 age group. Fraser McGlennan, 15, and Max King, 14, tied for eight overall with 87s. Michael Rose, 13, shot an 88 to finish ninth. Rose won the 13 to 14 age group as well as the 13 and under closest to the pin contest.

In a tie for 10th place with 91 apiece were 14-year-old Nadine Sykora and 11-year-old Matt Powell. Sykora was the top girl in the game, and Powell posted the best score in the 12 and under category.

The Sea to Sky Junior Tour continues on July 24 at Furry Creek. Contact Pat Miller at Nicklaus North to pre-register as the field is limited to 40. All entries include green fees, snacks at the ninth hole, and a post-game dinner at the clubhouse with awards.
