'Deep respect': Prominent Chinatown activist, documentarian passes away

He was scheduled to take part in the DTES Heart of the City festival.

Vancouverites are mourning the recent death of a prominent Chinatown activist and documentarian.

News of Sid Chow Tan's passing was shared on his Facebook page Tuesday night (Sept. 27).

The longtime activist regularly produced videos for various neighbourhood organizations, sat on the DTES Neighbourhood Council, and documented the Woodsquat civil disobedience act. 

He was scheduled to take part in the Downtown Eastside Heart of the City festival this fall to share videos highlighting activism in Chinatown titled My Art is Activism, Part II.

The community reflected on Tan's significant contributions while wishing condolences to his loved ones. 

"I worked with Sid on a few projects over the years," shared Holly Page. "He contributed so much to his community and fighting racism. He was an inspiration to myself and others."

Benita Bunjun commented, "Deep respect and love to you Sid Chow Tan. Thank you for gifting us so much for so long and for documenting our multiple journeys."

"I held Sid and his wisdom in such high esteem," shared Susan Stevenson. "For more than 30 years he was a wonderful friend and advisor."
