The Whistler Gymnastics Club raised over $2,070 on their Jan. 4 bottle drive with the help of 10 local bars and nightclubs, bed and breakfasts, and members of the community that donated bottles and cash to the club.

The total was a record fundraiser for the Whistler Bottle Depot, almost doubling the previous high mark.

Some of the money will go to help members of the Whistler Secondary Storm girl’s gymnastics team to get to the provincial high school championships in March. The first round of qualifiers will take place in mid-January.

The rest of the funding will go towards Whistler Gymnastics’ future facility.

The bars were the biggest contributor to the effort, donating bottles that piled up over the busy holidays.

Participating bars and nightclubs included Moe Joe’s, Citta, Crab Shack, Boot Pub, Tommy Africa’s, Garfinkel’s, Buffalo Bill’s, Longhorn Saloon, Maxx Fish and the Savage Beagle. Special thanks also go to Java at Nesters for supplying the club’s volunteers with hot chocolate as they sorted through the bottles.
