Viewpoint: Turn on the taps for the food bank

My name is Makia Elliott. I am a grade 12 student at Brooks Secondary School. I am currently taking Career Life Connections (CLC).

During this class we had a presentation made to us regarding Powell River Action Centre Food Bank’s role and need in our community. It was made clear that “the taps are closed in January” and funds/food donations drastically slow down.

In my CLC class, in which a capstone [serves as the culminating and usually integrative experience of an educational program] is required. I have chosen to address this issue.

Because I have the privilege to expend my energy knowing I will have the resources to replenish, I have chosen to run as a fundraiser, to turn the taps back on for January. I will be running from Craig Road to Brooks, which is 18 kilometers.

I will be running on the 22nd of January, starting at 11 am. I aim to arrive at the school at 1 pm.

Food bank manager Savanna Dee told me how much more they can do with money donations, so I ask everyone to get the word out about my fundraiser and to donate on the day of my run to help those people who are in need while the contribution of funds has slowed down.

All funds will be greatly appreciated. Anyone can donate on my GoFundMe page at gofundme.com by searching for makiaelliott, or donate directly to Powell River Action Centre Food Bank for my cause.

Makia Elliott is a qathet Regional District resident.
