The provincial government, through 2010 LegaciesNow, is
providing the Howe Sound School District with $10,000 to help 50 children
attend two local Explorations summer camps.
Joan McIntyre, MLA for West Vancouver-Garibaldi, made the
announcement this week.
"Explorations camps are a wonderful way for children to
enjoy the summer in a supervised and secure environment, providing parents with
an extra level of assurance over their child's safety," said McIntyre.
"I am sure the children who will participate in these local summer camps
not only will have a wonderful time but also will develop skills and memories
that will last a lifetime."
This summer, more than 3,000 students in 34 school districts
across the province will have the opportunity to participate in camps run by
schools and districts in partnership with local community organizations and
businesses. Through 2010 LegaciesNow, the B.C. Government is providing
approximately $500,000 towards this year's summer camps.
Explorations camps focus on arts, sports and recreation or a combination of the two. They are available for students in kindergarten through Grade 7 who normally would not have access to sports or arts programs. The camps provide a wide range of new activities for students, including First Nations art, music, drama, circus arts, mountain biking and voyageur canoeing.
