Local youth athletes and community leaders are invited to apply for this year’s B.C. Olympic Youth Leadership Academy.

Local youth athletes and community leaders are invited to apply for this year’s B.C. Olympic Youth Leadership Academy.

The event will be held from June 29 to July 4 at the University of British Columbia and is open to anyone completing Grades 9 or 10 this year.

Fifty delegates from around the province will be chosen. Judges will be looking for youths that have demonstrated their leadership abilities and interest in sport and Olympic values through their involvement on school or community teams, with school or community action groups and by acting as peer role models.

The B.C. Olympic Youth Leadership Academy is an opportunity for young people to learn about the Olympic movement, Olympic values, individual leadership styles and abilities and how to tackle projects and issues with teamwork.

Academy delegates will listen to Olympians and Paralympians speak about their experiences in competition and in life. They will discuss ways to embrace Olympic values in everyday life.

Workshop sessions and group work include goal setting, team building, event management projects, presentations and Olympic discussions.

There will be activity time during the week and lots of opportunity to meet other young people from all corners of the province.

The 2003 Academy will have an extra boost as the International Olympic Committee is due to announce the site of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games July 2, while the Academy is running.

Vancouver and Whistler are competing against Salzburg, Austria and Pyeongchang, Korea for the right to host the Games.

The Vancouver 2010 Bid Corporation hopes to include Academy delegates in any special events surrounding that announcement.

Academy delegates will be housed in the residences at the University of British Columbia.

The registration fee includes all meals, transportation during the Academy and travel and from the Academy for those who live outside of the Lower Mainland.

Partner organizations supporting the 2003 B.C. Olympic Youth Leadership Academy are B.C. Disability Sports, B.C. Games Society, B.C. School Sports, Canadian Olympic Committee, PacificSport Regional Centre. PacificSport Canadian Sport Centres and the province of B.C.
