Re: “How to be a good restaurant guest

I feel dumber having read this spring doepsychos comments, is your life that boring that you you feel you need to analyse every movement or mistake your server makes whenever you eat out, as much as youd like it to be this isnt some military operation, sit back enjoy a drink and some food (dont worry itll come out when its ready) and maybe even have a chat with your poor husband (about something other then what your servers doing) and most importantly just seriously chill out! Cause it sounds like youre about to burst a blood vessel. In all honesty if I were your server and you spoke to me like I was a slave and not a person I would happily forfeit my tip to pay out of my own pocket so you would have a bad experience because I cant stand rude negative people like you that are never happy with anything in life and feel like they need to come onto public forums like this and write ridiculously long responses just to complain and whinge abit more to achieve absolutely nothing except fulfilling your own weird self satisfaction, you say that youre just telling the truth, maybe so but its a truth that is so minor that no one(except you obviously) would even recognise it as a mistake by the server. would you like the server to apologise that your soup is 30 seconds later because they dropped off someones salad first? Seriously? Get a life.. P.s take it easy on the capital letters, we can already grasp your anger easy enough through the length of your essay. #saynotodoe

Re: “How to be a good restaurant guest

"A polite word with a manager about your experience will have a bigger impact, anyway."

Some managers don't care, so NO, I don't agree with that by a LONNNNGGG SHOT. One manager said to me "I'm not going to give 2 tables bad service." At least he admitted we(me and my husband) got bad service, but he sided with the cutting waitress that made us wait 10 minutes to get to get our check and ring it up for another couple to have their drinks and food orders taken before we were able to leave. A lot of managers are assholes and don't give a care. Especially if you have an issue and it's only just you with the issue, they don't fix the issue for you. They don't care.

Re: “How to be a good restaurant guest

"Most servers I know do their absolute best to get you fed and watered as efficiently as they can. "

Actually that is *******************SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO NOT TRUE*************** AND YOU KNOW IT! MOST ARE LAZY. Here are some reasons why:

1. At times even not write your order down.

2. Not write *ALL* request down(refills, bags, box, etc.)

3. Not compare their written orders or tickets/computer screen orders to the food for obvious errors.

4. Not compare the menu prices to the check prices to make sure the customers aren't overcharged.

5. Not verify the amount they are even charging you(has happened a few times where the server hands us the wrong amount charged on the credit card along with the check that has the correct amount).

6. Some don't go in the order in which request came in because they are too lazy to do so(like make 2 trips to bring soft drinks and then when the bar drinks is ready make another trip for that is what they should do, but some don't).

7. I have had 4 or 5 servers tell me "You might have to remind me" because they were too lazy to write my order down and reread their written order.

8. **Auction off drinks**(I just recently had a waitress do this to just me and my husband, seriously, TWO PEOPLE she was too lazy to get her written order out). Not my job to tell you what I had once you left the table. LAZY, LAZY, LAZY that is. You should know I had dr. pepper for example. I shouldnt have to tell you again and again.

9. A lot of servers dont go put in the order after getting it if they are double or triple sat making the 1st table wait 5-10 extra minutes for their food because they are TOO LAZY to make extra trips to the computer.

Most servers are lazy. They don't check things they give you. They CONSTANTLY BLAME the kitchen.

Here's a post in a thread from a former cook, read and weep:

www.ign.com/boards/threads/why-should-we-tip-aholes-who-barely-report-their-tips-to-the-irs.206740172/

Pepsi-Man5 said:

"As a former cook in several different restaurants.... waiters and waitresses are a dime a dozen, and most of them are completely stupid, self-centered, lazy, and couldn't care less about how the people at their tables are doing. They complain about people at the tables all of the time. ALL of the time. Even if you are at a restaurant, and your waitress walks away from the table and you stop and think, wow, my waitress is really nice. NO, she is in the back cussing you out to us at that exact moment that you are thinking otherwise. And don't think, no, not my server... YES, your server too. They don't like helping other servers. They despise having to sing happy birthday. They hate covering other server's tables while they take a break. They hate to clean and try to pay other servers to clean their sections for them so that they don't have to. And all they think about is money. Seriously. If you don't tip them high enough, they will complain about you for weeks. They may be nice and friendly to your face at the table, but they hate you. Sometimes when your food comes out wrong, it's the cook's fault. Most of the time, it's the server's fault. They constantly take food to the wrong tables. They constantly forget to ring in your order, so your food comes out late to you, but to the cooks it came out on time. But they will blame the cooks for it tho, hoping you will be forgiving of them and still tip them well. Sometimes, they forget to ring in your food, but some other table ordered some of the same plates, so they will take those plates to your table because they are done. And all that does is cause your table to only get half of the food they ordered. Meanwhile, the people who actually ordered those plates now have to wait longer because another server screwed them over. But the server who took those plates don't care that they screwed over a coworker, as they only care about thier own tips, not others. Servers cause way too much mayhem in restaurants, complain way too much, about everything. And they get hired off of the street with no training what so ever. The cooks have their issues too. But not nearly as many as the waiters/waitresses do. In the many restuarants that i've worked in, and the thousands of waiters or servers that i've worked with, i can honestly say that I've only seen a small, small handful of people who are actually good at it in every way. Like, maybe 10-20 people total, seriously. Out of literally a couple thousand. The rest are god awful.Thank god I don't work in restuarants anymore."

ALL of this is *********THE GOD'S **HONEST TRUTH*** and YOU KNOW IT!

Most servers do the VERY LEAST for their money.

I have had servers WALK AWAY WHILE*(YES WHILE) I AM ASKING FOR A LIST OF THINGS. They don't want to DO*******ALL OF THAT**********! I had a waitress FOR REAL say I quote "I didn't put it on the ticket because the food runners don't read the tickets" when I only added a side of ranch to an appetizer. THAT'S how ************VERY LAZY SHE WAS********. Also, she was walking away I could BARELY say I wanted ranch with it. Also, at the end, we asked for refills to-go, she asks my husband what he had when it was on the check what drinks we had ordered, but she was too lazy not only to not WRITE THEM DOWN in the first place, but she had STILL A **WAY** of verifying it when she went to print out the check, because at this restaurant, it had actually listed if you had coke or not, not just a "cold beverage", but actually listed what he ordered. That's how LAZY she was.

WHY are servers asking what drinks we had and not writing them down? THEY ARE LAZY and ARE TRULY NOT ******AT ALL TRYING THEIR BEST*********.

WHY do you want to LIE to the public, huh?

I have had servers say "the kitchen forgot" when I had condiments forgotten before and that's not true, ******THEY********** FORGOT to bring it from the kitchen or maybe even never rung it up to begin with.

I have had servers say "Oh the bacon is crispy" when I order it crispy simply because they don't want to do the extra step of putting in the order with the word crispy. Then I send it back and they have LOTS more work. It's RIDICULOUS!

I don't know ONE server that compares the check to the menu prices, do you? Truly, checking 2-4 prices only takes less than a minute of time HONESTLY. I have timed it. Most of the time I am in a party of 2 and the servers are that lazy to not check the check. Most are selfish, uncaring, and lazy just like the cook said. It's the TRUTH!

Re: “How to be a good restaurant guest

"it's still unfair to expect them to spend their income paying to serve you. "

IT IS FAIR if YOU GAVE SHITTY SERVICE, SURE IS! You give what you get. If you gave me excellent service you can get 25%-30% or more. If you gave me shitty service, you get ZERO and a talk with the manager. You won't ******LEARN****** unless your money suffers. That's HOW YOU LEARN, otherwise, WHY would you have any REASON or INCENTIVE to change your ways, huh?

Re: “How to be a good restaurant guest

"If you see me talking to another table, please don't wave at me frantically, interrupt me, or snap your fingers. "

Same goes for the customer that if it's OUR TURN, DON'T INTERRUPT OUR TURN to do someone else's turn. That means go in the order in which request come in. Don't go get 3 other drinks for table 3 if we just ordered 2. Make 2 trips so you don't take up our time away from us to do theirs. Make them wait their turn, just as **YOU*** say you want us to interrupt you while you are with other customer's turns, SAME THING! IT'S A 2-WAY STREET!

Re: “How to be a good restaurant guest

"when I ask how your day is going, "beer" or "water" isn't a suitable answer. "

Actually it IS since **CONTRADICT YOUR OWN LOGIC SAYING "The faster you get out, the more tables we can serve in a shift, the happier you are with your service, and the more money we make)", yet then you say you want us to ***PURPOSELY DELAY ORDERING***, WTH???

IF **WE** ARE ***PAYING YOU**** and you want *****OUR MONEY*******, YOU DO IT ******OUR WAY*******, NOT YOURS CONTROL FREAK!

It's not impolite to want to hurry up and order. It will get us out of there faster you dumb idiot!

Re: “How to be a good restaurant guest

"Know what your server can and can't controlwhen there's a long wait for food, I can't exactly run into the kitchen and prepare your meal for you."

Sorry to burst your bubble, but here's why you are wrong:

Ask yourself these questions as a server:

1. WHEN do you put in my order? Do you wait or do you go put it in immediately after taking it? If you are double sat or triple sat, you can still go put in each order into the computer after taking each tables order. By not doing that can result in a much longer wait and that would be YOUR FAULT.

2. FORGETTING to put in an order. My husband and I have experienced this for REAL that servers ADMITTED to our faces they have FORGOTTEN TO PUT ORDERS IN. All of them were appetizers, bar drinks, and a cup of soup.

3. Did you put in the order CORRECTLY into the computer? Have had many times servers ADMITTED to our faces they did not do that correctly. Have had wrong entres before due to our server putting in the order wrong. Have had wrong bar drinks too due to the server putting in the order wrong.

4. Did you FORGET ANYTHING I ORDERED such as a SIDE DISH? We have had this happen a number of times as well.

5. Did you DROP anything I ordered? Luckily, we have not had this happen, but I have seen a server once drop some fries from a plate before and I did have a waiter spill some margarita martini when pouring into a martini glass. In other words, it is possible, not likely, but very possible.

6. Did you remember to GET my food? We have had a server do that before. Also, we have had a number of servers forget bar drinks.

7. Did you bring out my food obviously correctly if you bring my food out? Do you realize how many times OUR OWN SERVER brings out DUH mistakes like the side dish is wrong, the entre is wrong, something obvious is not correct bacon that isnt covered up isnt extra, extra crispy when you can clearly notice that it isnt without touching anything, etc.? Every DUH mistake you bring out is YOUR FAULT I am waiting for what I did order by you wasting my time bringing me the wrong item or wrongly prepared item or forgot something. While we all make mistakes, I would have to say a good 90% of the time, servers NEVER COMPARE THE WRITTEN ORDERS TO THE FOOD, because they are TOO LAZY and DONT CARE!!

8. Servers DO wait to put in entre orders when appetizers, side salads, or cups of soup are ordered. THAT *IS* THE GODS TRUTH! Sometimes its TOO LONG THEY WAIT! If its another server, it still doesnt make it the kitchen staffs fault I have the wrong side dish for example since that is something thats obvious. Its either my server that didnt put in my order correctly or this other server that didnt compare the ticket to the food or that this other server did compare the ticket to the food, but just missed it(HIGHLY UNLIKELY, but possible).

9. WHEN do you come to GET MY ORDER? That part is covered in #2 below.

10. WHEN do you DECIDE to LET ME ORDER? That part is covered in #4 below.

11. WHEN do you decide to DELIVER MY FOOD? That part is covered in #1 below.

12. Do you, because they are out of something, decide to assume everyone wants the closest thing so you do the ordering for me? That part is covered in #3 below.

13. WHEN do you decide to check up on WHERE the food is? If the kitchen staff somehow lost the ticket, did you wait 30 minutes and then decide to find out that or did you check after 10-15 minutes to see that our food was getting started on?

1. Once, we had a Red Lobster waitress had our 2 entres on the tray as well as 2 side salads that were for a couple that wasnt even there when we ordered. Anyway, instead of bypassing their table to hand us ours first since WE DID ORDER FIRST(common sense would tell you that it takes more time to cook food than it does to fix a side salad anyways even if it wasnt our server that delivered our food, but it was our waitress that delivered our food), she decided to hand them theirs first off the tray. THAT IS SOMETHING THAT IS IN THE SERVERS CONTROL TO HAND OUT THINGS OFF THE SAME TRAY IN THE ORDER IN WHICH IT WAS ORDERED IN!!

2. Once, we had a waitress that greeted us which we ordered an appetizer as well as our drinks when greeted. I saw she tucking in chairs at empty tables and pretty much doing everything but coming back to get our entre order. Well, I found out what happened. She brought out our appetizer and when I asked she said that she wanted to wait to put in our entre orders. The thing is, that delayed us more by not at least coming to GET our orders. That way, when the appetizer was ready, we wouldnt have gotten delayed eating our appetizer since we then had to give our entre orders when we could have given our entre orders WELL BEFORE THAT and we would have gotten our entres faster due to that she could have just left to put our entre orders into the computer after delivering our appetizer instead of taking time to order when our appetizer was sitting in front of us. The point is, SHE delayed our entres as well as to be able to start eating our appetizer because she could have at least TAKEN our entre orders and then when our appetizer would have been brought out, could have immediately gone to the computer to put our entre orders in. What she did was make us wait while our hot appetizer was sitting in front of us, we couldnt touch it, because we had to order our entres and could have done that wayyy before that. She also delayed our entres because we had to spend extra time AFTER our appetizer arrived to give her our entre orders when we could have done that wayyyy before that.

3. Once, we had a waitress that assumed that because they were out of raspberry topping for a cheesecake slice when we had ordered dessert that shed bring us strawberry. Turns out, she knew when she put in the order that the computer had it the manager told us. So she did it on PURPOSE to be so lazy and uncaring as to not come to ask if we wanted the next closest thing. We didnt, we sent it back, so she had MORE WORK. Also, she didnt even think about what if someone is allergic to strawberries. I just honestly cant believe someone would do that. If they are out of something, common sense would be to come to see if the next closest thing is ok. Not everyone wants the next closest thing. So it wasnt like it was just getting the order wrong by accident or by not verifying the written order with what she was bringing or putting in the order wrong by accident, this was on PURPOSE to be LAZY and to ASSUME. I didnt know at first that she did that. I thought at first she just was that stupid(or truly just messed up(highly doubt it)) to bring us strawberries on top of a cheesecake when we ordered raspberries.

4. Your server delays coming to get your order or delays you ordering due to personal conversation. We have had that before as well. Once, we had a waiter that we didnt know after waiting 15 mins. for a table on Mardi Gras day ask us BEFORE we ORDERED ANYTHING Hows yalls Mardi Gras Go to any parades. See, I dont mind chit chat with a stranger, but be considerate to do it AFTER we have our orders into the computer so you dont take up our time.

We have also had servers not come to get our order due to playing around. Sometimes taking a long time or a longer time has A LOT to do with the server: My husband and I have had 3 TIMES where servers FORGOT to put food orders into the computer. We also have 8 times servers forget to get bar drinks from the bar. Once a waitress forgot to put in a bar drink into the computer. Two of the 3 times it was an appetizer and the servers ADMITTED doing so. The third time was a cup of bisque which is normally served before a meal just like a side salad is. My husband and I also have had delays due to that the servers delayed putting orders into the computer when they COULD have such as deciding to buss a table first or decide instead of a mini-greet(Ill be right with you all), one waiter I saw decided to take a party of 6 peoples drink/appetizer orders instead of putting in our food orders into the computer. I can understand if they call you over, but if they dont, you should be putting that order into the computer not delaying our food. The longer you wait to put in orders, the LONGER WE WAIT!! So truly think about that MOST of the time when you wait a LONG TIME for your food or bar drinks even, it could be the servers fault. 9 times out of 10, your server had *SOMETHING* to do with the delay in most cases! Thats the GODS TRUTH!

Your article Finding ElDorado made the Pique a worthwhile investment of my time today.
The raw, emotional honesty was striking and engaging. It feels like there is a risk in sharing on that level, but the experience is far reaching because it is part of the human experience.
...and I wanted to say thank you.

Re: “Barred owl invasion

The Barred Owl killed off and displaced the Spotted Owl? Where does this piffle come from? The forest companies?

If you read the scientific literature, the Spotted Owl had its old growth habitat almost completely wiped out by HUMANS. This logging created large open areas perfect for Barred Owl. Over the decades they began colonizing these new areas and thereby extended their range westward. They do not migrate.

Similar situation with mountain caribou in parts of BC we are culling wolves to preserve the last few dozen caribou. Are you going to tell us the wolves killed off the caribou now?

The author should get his facts straight instead of spreading ignorant myths which let humans off the hook for their shortsighted greed and stupidity.

We killed the Spotted Owl.

Re: “RIP to the Whistler guest experience

Though I have found the staff at restaurants and the hotel to be friendly, I have found other people to be quite cold, including the two young women at the Whistler Information centre who never smiled and greeted every comment I made with a blank stare. I say hi to every person I walk by (I was there in shoulder season so it wasn't that busy) and not even half the people in the village acknowledged me They were much friendlier on the trails around the village and I assumed many were tourists. It's my third visit and I think it's time to move on.

Re: “No shoes, no service

While the article is identified as an "Opinion Piece", perhaps the fact that it is the opinion of the author should be made more clear, so those that could be easily deceived are not confused, as there is not scientific basis to support the opinions of the author despite the fictional ones that were listed.
Having read it, and being knowledgeable of bare footing, as well as the difference between credible science, and the rest of the stuff that people pretend is science, but only gives science a bad name, I would recommend that the author work on becoming educated by credible scientific research as opposed to just hearsay from the internet or other wise, as all of the non-psychological concerns that were sited have no scientific backing, and are actually debunked by credible scientific research. For example if you never wear shoes you can not get athletes foot, you have to wear shoes to create the environment that athletes foot grows in. Then there are similar problems with all of the other concerns that were mentioned, the most common being the belief that there is a health issue or concern with walking in a bathroom bare foot.
As for the sensitive people as they are described by the author, we have psychologists to help them work through their personal mental issues, wither it be an aversion to seeing bare feet or otherwise.
