Re: “Government support for electric vehicles drives down emissions

Letter to the editor:

I just bought a PHEV for my business. I received $5,000 in govt incentives, a further $5000 in dealer incentives (its a 2018). I will get another another 18% of the purchase price back in business tax savings. Which made it a very affordable choice!

I can drive over 40kms in a single charge which gets me anywhere I need to go in Whistler emission free - without ever turning on the combustion engine.

But IMHO Whistler doesnt have enough incentives or even infrastructure to support the purchase of an EV. Yes - there are a handful of charge points but not in enough locations and quite often they are full. This is a good sign but also a challenge! Especially for the ones coming here from out of town for work or play who need to charge-up before they can get home...

And to use the charge points EV drivers still have to pay for parking. I think theres more we can do and should do as a community on this front.

Our council took a big stance against the damage that oil companies are doing and our economy relies on the transportation of people to our town - to work and play. I think the least we can do locally is make sure that the ones who come here with an EV are supported and rewarded for doing so.

Re: “Major health study shows benefits of combatting climate change

Whether its mass deforestation in Brazil, or increasingly dry forests resulting in record-breaking deadly wildfires in California, and now even in B.C., or a myriad of other categories of large-scale toxic pollutant emissions and dumps, currently theres discouragingly insufficient political gonad planet-wide to sufficiently address it.
Maybe due to (everyones) Spaceship Earths large size, there seems to be a general obliviousness in regards to our natural environment, as though pollutants emitted out of exhaust and drainage pipes, or tall smoke stacksor even the largest contamination eventscan somehow be safely absorbed into the air, sea, and land (i.e. out of sight, out of mind). It may be the same mentality that allows the immense amount of plastic waste, such as disposable straws, to eventually find its way into our life-filled oceans, where there are few, if any, caring souls to see it. Indeed, its quite fortunate that the plastic waste doesnt entirely sink out of sight to the bottom, like Albertan diluted bitumen crude oil (dilbit) spills, for then nothing may be done about it, regardless of divers reports of the awful existence of such plastic tangled messes. Also, it must be quite convenient for the fossil fuel industry to have such a large portion of mainstream society simply too exhausted and preoccupied with just barely feeding and housing their families on a substandard, if not below the poverty line, income to criticize the former for the great damage its doing to our planets natural environment and therefore our health, particularly when that damage may not be immediately observable.
After all, why worry about such things immediately unseen, regardless of their most immense importance, especially when there are various undesirable politicians and significant social issues over which to disputedistractions our mainstream news-media sadly are willing to sell us?
Undoubtedly, to have almost everyone addicted to driving their own fossil-fuel-powered single occupant vehicle helps keep their collective mouths shut about the planets greatest and very profitable polluter, lest they feel like and/or be publicly deemed hypocrites.
Although I have never (nor likely ever will) own and/or operate any form of motor vehicle, there are many green-minded people who rely upon their (probably very efficient) fossil-fuel powered cars since they havent had a monetarily feasible opportunity to acquire an electric vehicle. Also, I believe its no coincidence that the first thing upon his Progressive Conservative Partys election into office after a campaign won in part with a large political donation from the fossil fuel industry Premier Doug Ford canceled government rebate incentives for electric car buyers in Ontario. Re: “Human behaviour is at the root of orca plight

Now orcas are being exploited by the fishing industry claiming that seals and sea lions must be killed to save the salmon!

Who is really responsible for devastating the fragile ocean food chain? Was it humans or wildlife? History would prove that it was humans. We all must mend the broken ocean food chain!

Who else do you kill besides the seals and sea lions? Do you kill all the other fish eaters such as herons, eagles, bears, dolphins, porpoises, and whales?

Humans have the choice to go to grocery stores and their gardens while wildlife does not have choices. Plant based fish products can replace wild fish as being done with other meat habits.

Salmon and other fish habitats have also been destroyed by whale watch companies also running fishing charters, human development, animal excrement from factory farming, slaughter house wastes (ex. Lifeforce found a former one in Victoria, BC dumping the bloodied wastes into a salmon stream), fish farming, logging, treating the oceans as a garbage dump, dumping human sewage into the water ways and oceans, oil spills and so on.

Time to give wildlife their "quota" since the growing human populations have plundered and devastated more than their share. In order to Save the Orcas emergency actions must be implemented immediately under the Species at Risk Acts! This must include minimum 5 year moratoriums on Commercial, Sport and First Nation fishing!

DFO previously recommended against a West Coast Seal Hunt because they are unsafe to eat due to high levels of PCBs, mercury, flame retardants, etc.. The older the seal or sea lion the more contamination and DFO thought eating baby pinnipeds would not be publicly supported!

I've been thinking about this since the age of 14 or 15. I am 48 now and don't have human kids but have raised and supported thousands maybe millions of other creatures and plants. I feel just as fulfilled and proud of all my children.

Re: “Better discourse for a kinder world

The moral position is what the Liberal and crypto Liberal political machine is predicated upon, as well as using stooges like you in the media, Dave. For instance, if you are against runaway immigration you are a racist. Or if you think the carbon tax unfairly creates a class society where the rich can continue to pollute and the poor or soon to be poor can't afford to drive to a job which no bus can reach to pay off their debts they don't believe in climate change or global warming or whatever the "official" term is today by the "scientists". Look up, you see that big ball of fire? That's the Sun, Dave. Do you think it might have anything to do with the temperatures on our planet, which historically go up and down over time? It is time to wake up, Canada!

Re: “Energy storage gives renewables a jump-start

I really hope that we're able to see better energy storage facility options for renewable energy in the future. There is really just so much potential being wasted because there aren't any good storage facility options for this sort of energy production! It's good to see that there are some improvements happening, but I would think that the overall rate of implementation for all these new battery stores is sadly lacking!

Re: “Sustainable development goals offer a path to prosperity

Who cares about sustainable development goals ?!?! IT’S TIME TO GET RID OF SUZUKI ! We need a NEW Suzuki that DOES NOT make a mockery of the electoral system. We need a NEW Suzuki that DOES NOT interfere in illegal partisan political activities. We need a NEW Suzuki that DOES NOT flout taxation laws. We need a NEW Suzuki that cares more about the human race, which he has referred to as maggots. http://wp.me/p1jq40-Mn http://wp.me/p1jq40-mL We need to get rid of the current Suzuki, forever !

One media outlet has recently organized a PETITION against Suzuki, demanding that Canada Revenue Agency AUDIT this organization’s non-profit charity tax-exempt status, given its excessive interference in partisan politics. Re: “Deniers are all over the map; climate realists all over the world

I think the problem is less about science, and more about the role that pollutants play in our lives. Specifically, the fact that all of us are addicted to them....for jobs....income....convenient ways to travel...even the device you are reading this on wouldn't have been possible without extensive greenhouse emissions.

So beyond their jobs (most only a few degrees separated from massive emissions), who is willing to give up their plastic kayaks? Their bicycles? Their phones? Planes? All of which were crafted and taken to market using a massive medley of oil and other fossil derivatives.

The north pole is in Siberia, so the Arctic icecap is thousands of miles south. That's why it's melting. But there's no money in that theory, is there? Lies, smears, yeo you sound like a Liberal.

Same old tactic: humiliate the opposition in attempt to make them scatter, or agree. If that's the type of person that I have to look forward to in my future, then bring on global warming and toast this place to Hell!!

Re: “Deniers are all over the map; climate realists all over the world

Seriously? You are using the '97% of scientists agree' hoax? I'm guessing you still believe in the hockey stick hoax too? You like to tell people how to live, yet you don't follow your own advice. I think there's a name for people like you. What's the matter, no more threats of locking people up who don't agree with you? Just retire already, no one believes your nonsense anymore, except maybe Kathleen Wynne and Justin Trudeau and your friends at the CBC.
