While you may avoid kale because of its taste, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency advises that you should avoid one brand of the leaf cabbage altogether.

Specifically, the agency put out a food recall warning for a possible listeria contamination on one of Eat Smart brand’s packaged salads, the Salad Shake Ups – Sweet Kale.

The packaged salad was recalled on Wednesday, Dec. 5, but the agency advises that consumers should throw away any foods with the expiration date that reads, “Best Before DEC 03 2018.”

The package weighs 156 grams and the UPC number is 7 09351 30243 5.

With this in mind, CIFA advises that there haven’t been any reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product at this time.

The agency will continue conducting a food safety investigation, which may lead to the recall of other products.

It is important to note that foods contaminated with listeria may not appear to have anything wrong with them. However, foods contaminated with the bacteria may result in severe illness or even death.

Symptoms can include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache and neck stiffness. Pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk.

Although infected pregnant women may experience only mild, flu-like symptoms, the infection can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn or even stillbirth.
