The Audain Art Museum has announced its new fall exhibit.
Emily Carr: Fresh Seeing—French Modernism and the West Coast delves into the three years of Carr's life (1910 to 1912) in which she travelled to France and gleaned important inspiration. With 50 pieces drawn from private and corporate collections, the show will include work by Carr's instructors, as well as her paintings, watercolours and drawings.
The show, set to open on Sept. 21, will also highlight the museum's recent acquisition of Carr's painting Le Paysage (Brittany Landscape).
Michael Audain, the museum's founder, has a passion and curiosity for Carr's French period, which led to the project, according to a press release.
"For the work of an unrecognized artist from Victoria, B.C. to have been featured at such a prestigious international exhibition during the early 1900s was unprecedented," Audain said in the release. "As a young woman, Emily Carr was truly ahead of her time. Travelling to France set the stage for Carr's recognition as one of our country's most important artists."
