With just under a month to go until the 2001 FIS World Freestyle Ski Championships (Jan. 17-21), organizers are busy making the final preparations for this prestigious event.

Held once every two years to determine the world champions in moguls, dual moguls and aerials events, the Freestyle Championships are second only to the Olympics on an athlete’s list of priorities.

This is the first time that Canada has hosted the Freestyle World Championships, which will be attended by 1,500 VIPs, media from around the world, and 300 World Cup athletes.

Organizing an event of this calibre is a massive effort, and volunteers are needed to pitch in to make it run smoothly.

Luckily, after 11 years of hosting World Cup freestyle events in Whistler, organizers have put together a strong core of volunteers.

"We really look after our volunteers well and people come back year after year to enjoy the atmosphere at the freestyle events," says Ian Hutchings, Chief of Volunteers. "It’s a great social occasion as well as a good opportunity to find out what happens behind the scenes at a major international sports event."

All volunteers are also compensated with the usual high-quality schwag.

"You can earn free lift tickets, clothing and enjoy a great volley party at the end," says Hutchings. "Tree Brewing has just signed on as the official beer sponsor to the volunteers, so this should be a good incentive for our recruitment night."

Volunteers are needed in all areas, from Jan. 8 to Jan. 24. People are needed at the competition site, getting the sites ready, and to work behind the scenes with sponsors, VIPs and the media.

To volunteer, you can attend the recruitment night in the loft at Merlin’s on Dec. 28, at 7 p.m., or call the volunteer hotline at 938-7574.
