Olympic committee looking for First Nations representative

At first glance, the Vancouver-Whistler 2010 Winter Olympic Bid Corporation’s new executive committee may appear a little short on First Nations representation.

It currently has no First Nations member.

But that, said the bid corporation’s Dorothy Byrne, should be rectified early this year.

The bid corporation members re-appointed the same slate of 36 directors at their annual general meeting late last year but, for the first time, a 10-member executive committee was also named.

The small executive committee, which will meet regularly, was formed to expedite administrative and financial decisions.

Byrne said the intent is to increase the committee to 11 with the addition of a First Nations member. "That is the plan. It was just something that we could not manage in a timely way," said Byrne.

"We want to make sure that the First Nations people are comfortable with what we are doing and that we are selecting or appointing the right person from their point of view."

Whistler’s municipal administrator, Jim Godfrey, is the only Sea to Sky representative on the committee.

The other members include: the government’s Brian Dolson; Bob Foulkes of West Coast Energy; John Furlong of the Arbutus Club and the B.C. Games Society; Rusty Goepel of Goepel McDermid Inc.; Greg Greenough of MacLab Enterprises and Canadian Olympic Association treasurer; the COA’s Carol Ann Letheran; education consultant Bill McKerlich, Vancouver city manager Judy Rogers; and Don Rosenbloom of Rosenbloom and Aldrdige.
