Tourism Whistler reports a 20 per cent vacancy rate in the resort for the holiday period between Christmas and New Year’s Eve but overall Whistler saw an eight per cent increase in room nights sold for December 1999 over the previous year.

Director of media relations for Tourism Whistler, Connie Rabold, said the resort saw “very strong” business in early December. She said the resort was 93 per cent occupied on New Year’s Eve.

Whistler-Blackcomb, however, is not releasing its skier visit numbers for the Christmas and New Year’s period.

Whistler-Blackcomb director of marketing and sales, David Perry, said all he could report was, since the start of the ski season, year-to-date, skier visits are on track with the previous year. Perry said, come end-of-season, the mountains expect to match last winter’s record performance. “I am comfortable that we can exceed two million visits again.”
