The three-way deal to preserve the Emerald Forest was completed last week, with the municipality taking ownership of the 139-acre parcel of land after Intrawest purchased it from the Decigon group. In return for turning the 139-acre site over to the municipality Intrawest received $1 million and 476 new bed units — development rights beyond Whistler’s self-imposed development cap. The 476 new bed units and the 36 bed units that were associated with the Emerald Forest to build a 192-room hotel on Lot 5 of the Blackcomb Benchlands. What Intrawest paid Decigon for the property has not been made public. Larry Houghton of Decigon said Wednesday there are still some details of the deal to be finalized but the transfers were completed on Jan. 28. The municipality formed a trust company to hold the Emerald Forest lands and the Land Conservancy of B.C. will act as a watchdog of the site, ensuring that a conservation covenant on the property is adhered to.
