Animals and mystery surround this Valentine’s Day By Paul Andrew It’s no secret that some people have a difficult time expressing their emotions on the day when affections are to be shown. Named after Saint Valentine, Feb. 14 rolls around and some people choke, or do nothing and wish they had made a special gesture, but were unsure what, exactly, besides dinner and flowers. On the other hand, when things are organized for you, it’s much easier to participate in the love day. One event that should have the curious and outgoing singles seeking romance is The Dating Game, which will be part of other "Love Field" follies at AlpenRock House the evening of Feb. 14. Everyone knows how the half-hour TV show worked: the audience could see all the contestants, but the contestants couldn’t see each other. It was a crap-shoot, but the idea was that a date was selected because of their personality and character, rather than some physical attraction. The format will be the same at AlpenRock. "We’ll have three sets of contestants," said Monika Mikita, who handles promotions for AlpenRock House. "We will do a fourth set by choosing people from the audience. But we’ll do it secretly because you’re not supposed to see each other before you play the game." Mikita says romantic prizes, such as a Canadian Snowmobile Adventure for two up to the Crystal Hut for a candle light fondue dinner, will be awarded to the winning couple. Other activities such as a kissing booth, spin the bottle and maybe a romantic game of Twister will also be going on at AlpenRock for Valentine’s Day. If it’s a unique gift you’re looking for and nude skiing won’t do, then check out Dusty’s on Feb. 13 for the Puppy Love, pre-Valentine’s Day pet perusal, which is designed to raise funds for Whistler Animals Galore. Health restrictions specify no animals are allowed to mingle among people inside pubs, but WAG co-ordinator Jody Stockfish says they have several pets up for adoption, and she says pictures of the pooches will be on display at Dusty’s. "It’s not very responsible to give away dogs or puppies right on the site," Stockfish said. "We normally do a screening to match up a dog with an owner. We don’t want to give a puppy to someone who’s leaving town in two months. I heard at the end of last season there were a lot of abandoned dogs in Whistler." The man organizing the benefit for WAG, Dusty’s bartender Richard Zimmer, told Stockfish he wanted to do something special for the dogs in Whistler. "I really don’t have time to raise money for anything else and it pisses me off when I see people that don’t take care of their dogs, like leaving them in the car all day. The dogs get mean." Zimmer said. "This is a good cause. I really wanted to have dogs here but I guess we can’t do that. Pictures are okay." Dusty’s will have some doggie trivia games, in addition to live music by Whistler rockers Edgewise. All money raised from the $5 cover goes to WAG. If mystery is part of your romantic heart, try masquerading as someone else during the Eros party Feb. 14 at the Garibaldi Lift Co. The evening will not only be a "lovers’ masquerade," it will also be a dancer’s dream come true with DJ James Brown, DJ Boatman, DJ Shandy Rae and DJ Eric. Costumes are encouraged and sexy toys from The Love Nest in Whistler will be awarded sometime during the evening, which begins around 9 p.m. Cigars, which for some reason are sexy, will also figure into the evening somehow. Two apres shows on the GLC patio at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. will include go go dancers and one or two of the four DJs performing in the evening. Admission is $14 at the door. You couldn’t get enough of Dusty’s doggie day and you want to go back for more? No problem, says DJ Yuggy, who’s setting up an evening Feb. 14 that promises deep house grooves courtesy of himself and DJ Milton. The unusual element to this party is local singer "Tara," who will be vocalising live along with the instrumental tracks provided by the two DJs. To add to the ambience, a slide show of stunt riding snowboarders will be projected all evening courtesy of photographer "Thomas." The evening begins around 9 p.m., and Yuggy says he’ll get the shuttle bus working for the event.
