Victoria Troup, a naturalist well-known in the Sea to Sky area, has passed suddenly at the age of 54. Troup, along with Nancy Ricker, was responsible for starting to collate a natural history inventory of the Whistler region in the mid 1980s. The goal was to ultimately produce a comprehensive guide for both amateur and expert naturalists. The duo published an article on Whistler birds as a taste of what was yet to come for local flora and vertebrate fauna. Troup, a Capilano College biology instructor for the past 23 years, was also co-author of the Whistler checklist used for the annual Christmas bird count. She was an active member of the Howe Sound Round Table, a member of the B.C. Ornithologists, assisted with the Kanawa Canoe Museum in Ontario and for many years volunteered with the Royal Life Saving Society of Canada. A memorial service was held this week in West Vancouver.
