The secrets of using special events — like the World Ski and Snowboard Festival — to sell lift tickets and fill rooms and restaurants in traditional slow periods is what Whistler ski industry veteran David Perry will be divulging at the Canadian Snow Industry Symposium, to be held in the resort April 16-18. The event is scheduled to coincide with the Telus World Ski and Snowboard Festival and will feature a series of speakers and seminars crafted to help the snow sports industry achieve Peak Performance — the theme of this year’s gathering. The symposium is open to anyone working in, or benefiting from, the ski or snowboard industry. According to the Canadian Ski Council, the event promises to be a "meeting of the minds" to discuss issues and find solutions to problems with the help of thought-provoking seminars. Perry’s talk on how to turn down time into prime time takes place Sunday, April 16 at 3:30 p.m. His message is catered to resorts of any size, associations, clubs, corporate sponsors or anyone looking for a way to "stir-up" the marketplace. He also promises to provide an insiders view to the workings of the WSSF, now touted as the largest winter sports event in North America. Also on the symposium agenda are: o Ed Pitoniak, senior vice president with the Intrawest Resort Operations Group, who will speak on "Building an excitement culture – how Canadian ski areas, big and small, can deliver every day what drives business day by day – excitement"; o Jules Older, Vermont resident and editor-in-chief of Ski Press Magazine, the Canadian ski publication that boasts the largest circulation, will talk about "How to make more money – without spending much more money – at your ski area"; o Steve Mossop, senior vice president of the Angus Reid Group will focus on the new economy. His presentation is titled: "Are you ready for e-business? – the Canadian face of the web." Mossop has had a hand in over $10 million worth of research in the e-commerce sector and believes we are on the threshold of an internet metamorphosis from niche to mainstream market. He will relate his talk to how snow sports consumers are reacting to these changes in the marketplace and he will take a look at the "faces" behind the stats. o Dr. James Frank, chief economist with the Conference Board of Canada will address: "Looking through 2001 – plan for another good year"; o Ted Davis, Western editor for Canadian Travel Press will talk on "Retail travel agents – how can winter resorts better utilize the potential of this huge sale network?"; o Michael Berry, president of the National Ski Areas Association will talk on "Change – you ain’t seen nothing yet" and; o Jack Turner, CEO of Sirdar and the creator of Snow Monsters™ will speak on the topic of "Sex, lies and red tape – how the ski industry really works."
