D'Arcy digs deep for Variety Club Telethon

For more than 20 years, the community spirit in D’Arcy has soared for the Variety Club Telethon. This year was no exception. The town of just a few hundred residents dug deep into its pockets and raised $2,540.50 for the children’s charity.

For more than 20 years, the community spirit in D’Arcy has soared for the Variety Club Telethon. This year was no exception.

The town of just a few hundred residents dug deep into its pockets and raised $2,540.50 for the children’s charity. Gerald Gabriel of the N’Quatqua Band was the driving force behind this year’s efforts, organizing a marathon of events including a pancake breakfast, rummage sale, auction, raffle, bingo, spaghetti dinner and the always popular heart race.

Numbered hearts are released into Gates River to float downstream to Anderson Lake. Pemberton Home hardware, Russ Fleming and Theresa Barney were the lucky owners of the first three hearts across the finish line.

The D’Arcy and Pemberton communities hold a special fondness for the charity. Several children have benefitted from the generosity of The Variety Club through its donation of walkers, wheelchairs and most recently a bath-lift.

D’Arcy’s efforts aren’t going unnoticed. BCTV plans on taping the towns fund-raising activities next year, to be shown on the annual Telethon. Locally, plans are already underway for 2002.
