Whistler has the dubious distinction of receiving the second smallest grant handed out by the provincial government to municipalities this year.
Whistler will receive $27,124 from the provincial government this year. Only Kitimat, which will receive $21,642, received a smaller grant.
Municipal Affairs Minister Jim Doyle announced the 2001 grants, totalling $33.8 million, on Wednesday. Of the 154 grants to municipalities, Vancouver will receive the largest, $2,560,000. Pemberton will receive $116,740 while Squamish will get $139,000.
A press release from the Municipal Affairs ministry does not say how the grant amounts were determined. However, the release does say many communities will soon be notified about grants they will receive under the new Canada-B.C. infrastructure program. Whistler has applied for funding under that program, which will provide $800 million over six years.
Doyle says because traffic fine revenue was down this year – $10 million compared to $13.2 million last year – there was a smaller pool of funds to be shared under the traffic fine revenue sharing program.
The Squamish-Lillooet Regional District will receive a grant of $120,000, the same amount as most regional districts.
