A week earlier, Whistler’s younger KIP and Tyro Zone athletes did extremely well against other Zone 5 teams (Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island) at a meet at the Phoenix Gymnastics Club in Vancouver.

In the Delta Invitational, where Whistler competed against some of the biggest and best equipped gyms in the province, the girls came away with an impressive collection of medals.

Midget tumbler Frances Moody won two golds, one on the bars and one on the floor. Tyro Natasha Quinn won a gold on the floor, a silver on the beam, and a third on the vault. The Level 1 Tyro team also walked away with the second place team trophy.

The next stop for the provincial team is an invitational in Bellingham, Washington, later this month, and a trip to the provincial championships and KATTS Invitational in Kamloops in May.

The younger competitors also did well at the Phoenix Meet, with most competitors coming away with medals on the bars and floor exercises.

In the Kids in Progress (KIP) competition, Riley McSkimming won a silver on the bars and a bronze on the floor, Ashlen Coombs won two bronze medals, Makina Coombs won two silvers, Emily Barratt won a bronze and a silver, Hilary Carrell won two bronzes, Angelina Manuel, Annik Tetreault, and Madelaine Podborski won two silvers each, Becky Boese won a silver and a gold, and Olivia Murray won two bronze medals.

In the Zone competition, Christine Brett and Merritt Patterson tied for the bronze on the bars, and Brett went on to finish fourth on the floor and third again on the vault. Tegan Turcotte was a close fourth on the bars, and Samatha Depatie just missed a medal on the vault with a fourth place finish. She also finished fifth on the floor.

The next showing for the KIP and Zone teams will be at the Flicka Invitational April 7 and 8.
