Dozens of Whistler and Pemberton locals took part in the annual 10K Vancouver Sun Run on April 22, jostling their way through a record crowd of 45,080 people, more than 35,000 of whom were runners.

Two of those athletes managed to crack the top five in their respective categories: Morgan Titus and Mae Palm.

Titus, 17, finished second in the 18 and under race, crossing the finish line in a time of 32 minutes and 33 seconds. He finished just 26 seconds behind 14-year-old racer Christopher Winter of North Vancouver, who has been turning heads in recent years.

Palm, a veteran of marathons and ultramarathons, finished first in the age 60 to 64 category with a time of 47:11. "I was really quite surprised at the end of the race," says Palm. "I fell and hurt my ribs a few weeks ago, and I did the Boston Marathon on April 16."

It was marathon number 96 for Palm, who used the 10K Sun Run to train for upcoming marathons in Vancouver and Penticton. "I always find shorter distances harder because I have to run faster," says Palm, who has competed in several ultramarathons and set seven records for her age group. "My legs weren’t recovered, and I had to work harder to go faster by even a few seconds a mile."

Pique NewsMagazine’s team finished fifth in the Communications category, beating out the Vancouver Sun’s own runners. Daniel Havens and John Blok led the way, posting times of 38.22 and 39.33 respectively.
