Garibaldi Alpen squeaks through deadline

Wolfgang Richter’s Garibaldi Alpen group made it with only hours to spare but it will be at least another week before the B.C.

Wolfgang Richter’s Garibaldi Alpen group made it with only hours to spare but it will be at least another week before the B.C. Assets and Lands Corporation will be able to say if the group’s proposal to develop a four-season ski resort on the slopes of Brohm Ridge will live.

Garibaldi Alpen had until Monday, April 30 to show BCAL it has the financial capacity to see the project through the provincial approval process.

Richter also had to present an acceptable business plan that details how and when the Environmental Assessment and the Commercial Alpine Ski Policy requirements will be met.

Garibaldi Alpen was given exclusive rights to come up with a comprehensive plan for the Crown land within a four-year period but suffered a major setback when it lost a key investor over a year ago.

That four-year period expired Feb. 28 this year but BCAL granted Richter a 60-day extension to his interim agreement with the province.

BCAL’s Charles Littledale said Richter "delivered quite a large package of information" in the late afternoon hours of April 30.

But Littledale can’t say yet whether the information provided meets the outstanding requirements. "I hope to start reviewing it tomorrow and then we will see where we go from there."

Littledale said his review "may be very quick or it could take a while" depending on the substance of the information provided by Richter’s group.

On the same day Richter presented his package to BCAL, news broke that one of the earlier investors in the project, First Capital Investment Corp, is suing Garibaldi Alpen Resorts for just over $1.2 million for monies loaned.
