Whistler cyclists strong in B.C. Cup

Whistler mountain bikers won four divisions at Hammerfest 2001, the second B.C. Cup cross-country race of the season held in Parksville last weekend.

Whistler mountain bikers won four divisions at Hammerfest 2001, the second B.C. Cup cross-country race of the season held in Parksville last weekend.

There was more mud than last year, the track was more technical, and the weather alternated between sun and hail throughout the race, but local racers managed to finish strong.

Whistler’s Chad Miles, the current Canadian cross-country champion, finished first in the Pro Elite division with a time of 2 hours 38 minutes 35 seconds for four laps of the course. This is an improvement on his fifth in Nanaimo in mid-April, in the first B.C. Cup of the season. Pro Michael Boehm finished 14 th .

Among the Under 17 Men, Brendon Edgar held on to third with a time of 1:42:18 for two laps. This was a huge improvement on his ninth in Nanaimo.

In the Under 15 Men, James Crowe finished the day first with a time of 56:53 for one lap.

In the Junior Expert Men, Will Routley finished three laps in 2:17:40 to take first place by less than a minute. Recently named to the junior national development team, Routley started the season early at the Sea Otter Classic in California. He finished fifth in the cross country, fifth on the road, and 17 th in the road criterium.

He is currently in seventh spot in the province after two qualifying races, but has an excellent change of making the B.C. team for the Canada Summer Games if he can do well in a road race this weekend and a cross country time trial in two weeks. They are not his best events, and he is competing against older racers who are also looking for berths in the Summer Games, but he feels he is in excellent position with a win last weekend.

He finished third in the first B.C. Cup of the season.

Whistler’s Shawn Greenaway finished 14 th in the Master Expert Men’s over 30 division, completing three laps in 2:41:22.

Tony Routley, Will’s father, won the Master Expert Men’s over 40 race in a time of 1:35:43 over two laps, and is now two for two in the B.C. Cup series. He accompanied Will to California and finished fourth in the cross country.

Eric Crowe, James’ father, finished in fourth in the over 40 race with a time of 1:41:48.

In the first B.C. Cup downhill of the season, Whistler’s Jeff Beatty finished in fifth place. After slaying the competition last year to win the B.C. Cup and Canada Cup in the Cadet Expert category, Beatty moved up to Junior Expert Men where he is competing again older and more experienced downhillers.
