Star Search on again

The Squamish/Whistler Star Search has changed its format but not its rules. The talent competition for 13-21 years olds began nine years ago as a preliminary contest for the PNE Youth Talent Search.

The talent competition for 13-21 years olds began nine years ago as a preliminary contest for the PNE Youth Talent Search. In the past, communities across the province staged their own contests with the winners gathering at the PNE. The winner of the PNE Search goes on to compete internationally.

The PNE has changed its preliminary format this year. Anyone may now enter by simply submitting a video tape. As a result, The Howe Sound Performing Arts Association considered dropping its Star Search altogether. However, local youth have made it known that they feel this is an important tradition in showcasing up-and-coming talent.

Star Search will continue with the same rules as in past years. Three judges – Rob Hallam, general manager of Millennium Place, Veronica McPhee, music educator, and Heather Bechmeyer, piano teacher – will be on hand to judge the performances. Organizers encourage anyone from the 13-21 age range to enter, emphasizing this is not only a competition, but an evening of fun and entertainment. Anyone interested should contact Gordon by May 28 at 898-5643.

Star Search will be held Friday, June 8 at 7:30 p.m. at the Eagle Eye Theatre in Squamish.
