Cantaloupe Caution

Health Canada is advising Canadians to be careful when preparing cantaloupe melons after an outbreak of Salmonella poona caused an outbreak of food poisoning the U.S. which killed at least two people. Fourteen states have reported cases.

Consumers are being warned to wash all their fruit and vegetables carefully – any food that is grown on or near the ground can come into contact with animal waste carrying the disease. The Salmonella can get into the melon when you cut through the skin, or when skin and fruit come into contact on the cutting board.

You should scrub a cantaloupe with soap and hot water, and rinse with cool water before cutting. Cut away damaged or bruised areas. You should also clean knives, cutting boards and your hands carefully after eating, and throw away any of the fruit that’s been sitting at room temperature for more than four hours.
