In the wake of the May 28 stabbing and assault on Whistler’s Main Street, municipal council has announced its support for additional RCMP presence in the village.

"Public safety is our primary concern. It is imperative that our reputation as a safe, family-oriented destination remains intact," said Mayor Hugh O’Reilly in a statement read at the June 4 regular council meeting.

As of June 2, six additional police officers have been added to the current full-time Whistler RCMP force. Their primary duties will be to patrol the village in teams of two and respond to calls during potential problem times.

Council will also be working with the accommodation sector, bars and businesses on other initiatives to defuse trouble before it begins, said O’Reilly.

"We will take whatever measures are necessary to ensure the safety of our visitors and residents."
