It’s the little pub with big ideas.

BBK’s was ahead of the pack when it declared itself Whistler’s first smoke-free pub. Now it continues to enhance the atmosphere by opening its doors to local artisans. BBK’s will host an exhibit for Whistler artist, Alexis Victor, this weekend (July 14-15). And although the pub only seats 25, it’s a great opportunity for the young artist to show her work in a town without public galleries.

Largely self taught, 20-year-old Victor has already branched out to explore many artistic mediums, including drawing, painting and sculpting. Her latest venture was a four-month course in blacksmithing, something she hopes to incorporate into multi-media pieces.

"I’m a pretty small girl, so it’s definitely not typical for someone like me to do, so I thought it would be a challenge," says Victor.

Her one year stay in Whistler has also brought growth to her art. Like many artists who flock to the area, mother nature’s canvass became the subject of several of her works.

"I do a lot of abstract expressionism, mainly life painting and drawing. That seems to be where I excel the most. I haven’t had a lot of education it yet, so I’ve just been doing it for fun, but I want to pursue a career in it.

"I started to do a lot of landscapes here. It was fun, again because it was different. I think I lean towards the Emily Carr aspect though, more than the true to life art."

Victor will return to her home province of Ontario this fall where she has been accepted to the Toronto School of the Arts. The Saturday night exhibit will be her chance to share her passion with Whistler friends. The show gets started at around 9 p.m. at BBK’s (located in the Upper Village). Admission is free and everyone is welcome.
