Wind no match for junior golfers

Strong winds were a factor on the fourth stop of the Sea to Sky Junior Tour, at Furry Creek on July 25, but competitors still managed to shoot the odd birdie and post some excellent scores.

Strong winds were a factor on the fourth stop of the Sea to Sky Junior Tour, at Furry Creek on July 25, but competitors still managed to shoot the odd birdie and post some excellent scores. Three out of 33 players managed to shoot in the 70s, while 15 scored in the 80s.

Ryan Andrew of Calgary (17) shot a three over par 75 to win the contest, aided by a birdie on the difficult 16th.

Matt Hastings of Vancouver (15) was next in line with a 77.

In third place – and the top woman in the contest – was Ashley Hogg of Squamish with a 79.

Scott Sellers (16) of Squamish and Gordan Yakura (15) of Vancouver tied for fourth with scores of 80.

Vancouver’s Ben heaps (17) was fifth with an 81.

Shawn Crichton (18) of Whistler and Dean Yakura (16) of Vancouver tied for sixth with a pair of 83s. Danielle O’Reilly (18) and Vincent Semenuk (15) of Whistler tied for seventh with 84s.

Four players tied for eighth. Adam Butler (16), Bryon Thom (17), Daniel Brown (16) and Jordan Koren (14) shot rounds of 86.

Warren Hopwood (15) was alone in ninth and Mike Heenan (14), Ryan Worrod (18) and Chris Nixon-Giles (14) tied for 10th.

Worrod, Yakura and Brown all birdied the 10th hole.

The tour continues on Aug. 13 at Pemberton Valley, teeing off at 1 p.m. The cost is $30 or $25 for junior club members, including green fees, a snack at the ninth and dinner at the club.
