The annual Whistler-Blackcomb Tennis Tournament, sponsored by Intrawest, is set for Aug. 11 and 12 at the Whistler Valley Tennis Club in Creekside.

The event will feature men’s doubles, ladies doubles and mixed doubles competition. Division rankings for the tournament will be based on the combined ages of the players, rather than ability. For example, two players with a total combined age of 80 would play another team with a similar combined age.

"Nobody needs to be an ace player to compete, and anyone without a partner will be teamed with another person," says club pro Scott Pedersen. "It’s the biggest tennis tournament of the year for Whistler people, and will be lots of fun."

Winners will receive trophies, plus their share of more than $1,000 in prizes that will be given away.

The cost of entering is $24 per team, and games will commence at 9 a.m. on both days of the competition in a round robin format. The deadline for entries is Aug. 10, and forms are available at the Creekside Tennis clubhouse or by phoning 938-1215.

In addition to the seniors tournament, a junior doubles prize tournament will be help on the following Wednesday (Aug. 15).

Prove it on the court

The best businesses in Whistler are invited to make their case in court, or rather on court at the Whistler Racquet and Golf Resort.

The Whistler Racquet and Golf Resort Tennis Classic will feature 25 teams of four – two men and two women – in a for-fun tennis tournament Sept. 23. The only thing at stake is pride and the title of The Best.

Four divisions are being organized: restaurants, hotels, real estate/property management, and "entrepreneurial spirited." There will be a showdown among division winners to determine the best overall, and a trophy for the winners to show the world they are the best.

The tournament starts at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 23 and concludes that evening with live music, food, dancing and tales of the day’s matches. In between there will be a barbecue and beer garden. Tournament entry fee includes admission for the four team participants. Guests are invited to attend the reception at an additional cost.

Mount Currie rink needs makeover

Donations are needed to help repair the Mount Currie Ice Rink and make it a better place for kids to play.

The Lil’wat Leadership One Group is working to clean up the neighbourhood and repair the rink, which is now used for basketball, roller hockey, inline skating and scooters. The arena needs new basketball hoops and backboards, the blacktop needs repairs and there’s lots of repairs to be done. Donations of building supplies, paint, hardware, monetary assistance and labour are welcome. Call Rachel Andrew at 604-894-6656.
