Two of Whistler’s strongest young swimmers are heading to the regional championships in Vancouver this weekend, after posting some excellent results in June and July.

Six year old Kerry-Anne Hamilton, who set a meet record at her first competition in Squamish back in June, has moved up an age category to compete against girls up to eight years old. She still managed to hold her own in this division, earning a number of top 10 results.

In the upcoming regionals, at the urging of her coach, Hamilton will compete in the six and under division, where she has a good chance of taking home medals in her stronger events, freestyle and back stroke.

Whistler Swim Club paddler Samantha Ellis, 10, has also been participating in the 8 to 10 age group, posting a number of personal bests and winning ribbons at a number of competitions.

Last weekend, at a competitive meet in North Vancouver, Ellis achieved top 10 results in all of her individual races, finished fifth in the B group final for the individual medley, and finished third in both the freestyle and medley team relays.

Both swimmers have trained hard all summer, travelling to Squamish and Vancouver to train and compete as part of the Squamish Pirates. Coaches Brandi Higgins of Whistler, and Kelly Kaye of Squamish, as well as the strong work ethic of the Pirates Team, have been instrumental in developing this local talent.

Whistler Swim Club is currently restructuring and putting together a training schedule for next season, and wants to hear from anyone who wants to get involved. Contact Craig and Gill at 932-3800, or John and Doris at 932-0296 for more information.
