The City of Brotherly Love was definitely kind to the Pemberton Laoyam Eagles Dragon Boat Team, which came away from the World Dragon Boat Racing Championships last weekend with two silver medals against the top junior and mixed teams on the planet.

The Schuylkill River provided the setting for the competition, which attracted hundreds of national and independent teams who qualified for a berth. The races ran over a five-day period.

Racing as the Canadian Junior Mixed Crew, the Eagles aided Canada in winning the lion’s share of medals at the worlds, including six gold, four silver, and three bronze medals, for a total of 13. Germany and the U.S. were second and third with 11 medals each.

The Eagles were close in both of their medal races, finishing three-tenths of a second back of Germany in the 250 metre grand final, and one and a half seconds back of Germany in the 500 metre. In the 500 metre, a few of the crew members fell out of their seats at one point, but managed to stay in the race and beat the U.S. team by more than a second.

Over the past two weeks, the Eagles have been travelling and racing, first winning the North American high school championship in Long Beach, California, and then flying to Philadelphia to compete in the worlds.
