The second-to-last B.C. Cup mountain bike races took place last weekend in Fernie as part of the "Fun ’n Madness," and as usual there were some Whistler riders in some very high places.
STORMBC founder and coach Chris Colbeck easily took the men’s pro elite downhill, crossing the finish line almost five seconds ahead of the next fastest rider.
"It’s a really technical race," says Colbeck. "You really had to pick your lines to be able to carry your speed around the tight corners. It’s one of my favourite courses, and I’ve always been pretty good in the corners."
Colbeck also finished third in the dual slalom, although it’s been five years since he last raced in this discipline. "That was kind of a nice surprise," he says.
In cross country competition, Whistler’s Chad Miles took the top spot in the long and technical Pro Elite men’s race by more than a minute.
Brook Baker, a STORMBC rider, raced uncontested to win the women’s Junior Expert category.
Teammate Jerry McArthur also made the podium, finishing third in the Under 17 men’s race.
The B.C. Cup Championships take place this weekend in Rossland. According to Colbeck, the STORMBC team will be there for the finals to finish up their winning season.
Nesters Market, Whistler Real Estate and Greg Gardner of Greg Gardner Motors in Squamish have donated a 15-seat van to make it easier for the STORMBC racing team to travel to competitions.
