B.C. Hydro's Bridge-Coastal Restoration Program is about to flash some cash to combat the effects of dams in the Whistler area.

BCRP is currently accepting applications that will restore fish and wildlife populations in watersheds affected by B.C. Hydro generation facilities, which includes the Cheakamus, Seton and Bridge River systems.

BCRP annually allocates $1.5 million to fish and wildlife restoration projects.

But just over $1 million was spent on 29 projects last year, including:

? $135,000 on habitat improvement projects in the Cheakamus River watershed;

? $153,000 in the Seton and Bridge river watersheds.

The BCRP application process is open to any group or individual and will be reviewed for program eligibility and technical merit.

The review board consists of three First Nation members; three public members; and one member each from Fisheries and Oceans Canada, B.C. Hydro and the B.C. environment ministry.

BCRP is the third fish and wildlife restoration program sponsored by B.C. Hydro. Similar compensation programs are underway in other areas affected by dams, such as the Columbia Basin and Peace-Williston region.

The application deadline for BCRP funding is Nov. 9, 2001.
