A busy week at the library

During the week of Oct. 22-28, all the libraries in the province participated in the first ever "Typical Library Week Survey." We haven’t received the results for the whole province but we do have the numbers for the Whistler Public Library and they are remarkable.

For six days volunteers, library trustees and staff counted EVERY person who came through the doors of the library. The library was open 51 hours during this time period and 2,608 people used the library. This is a very high number when you consider the size of the library and the time of year. October is typically a quiet month for Whistler yet this number indicates that a lot of the people in Whistler were using the library.

The library is the one place you can go to 1) borrow books, videos, CDs, magazines, talking books, 2) search the Internet for cheap airline tickets, 3) send an e-mail to a friend, 4) type your resume, 5) apply to Whistler-Blackcomb for work, 6) attend a children’s story time, 7) keep warm! The number of visitors to the Library emphasizes the importance of the facility in the community.

We also kept statistics on the following:

• 2,243 items were checked out

• 697 people accessed our Web site — www.whistlerweb.net/library

• 468 people used the 5 computers

• 200 people joined the library

• 117 reference questions were asked

We will keep you posted as to the results of the province-wide survey.
