It's Chanukah, too There's more than Christmas going on at this time of year. The Jewish community is celebrating Chanukah with the annual candle lighting ceremony, Dec. 25 at 3:30 p.m., in front of the Pharmasave in Village Square. A Chanukah party follows at 4:30 p.m. at the Delta Whistler Resort Hotel. Everyone is welcome to attend. First Night volleys wanted Ho hum, here it is New Year's Eve again and there's nothing to do. Quoth the Raven: Nevermore! Be a volunteer instead to help make Whistler Village First Night celebrations a success. The alcohol-free event is an annual tradition — weather permitting — of music and fun. To volunteer, call Mountain Community Health Alternatives at 938-3181. Trevor would watch it Peter Chrzanowski's award-winning personal documentary "The Spirit" will be broadcast on the Knowledge Network, Monday, Dec. 22, at 8 p.m. The hour-long film tells a cautionary tale about the dangerous sport of ski mountaineering and follows the exploits of some Whistler-based skiers known as "the Dirtbags." The Spirit is dedicated to Whistler’s Trevor Petersen who died in an avalanche while skiing the French Alps two winters ago. The other side of Xmas Not everyone experiences happy times during the holiday season. Whistler Community Services Society now funds and organizes a crisis line for those individuals who need support in various crisis situations. Call 932-COPE (932-2673). Callers are connected to a crisis centre in Abbotsford where trained volunteers will take the time needed to support you. "Whistler does not have the population base to support a 24-hour phone line with volunteer involvement," says Whistler Community Services Society executive director Janet McDonald about the call forwarding. "The Abbotsford Church organizes and trains all the volunteers." Do-it-yourself fun The Mountain Craft and Grove Galleries are giving workshops every Monday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 10 a.m. to learn to make holiday decorations, party crackers, antiqued curio boxes and other gift ideas. The non-profit workshops are for visitors and residents alike. Class size is limited, so you are asked to phone to reserve a spot. Costs start at a mere $5. Light refreshments are served. Children under 12 must have an adult along. Phone 932-5001, or drop by at the Cornerstone Building. Look for the sign of the hand.
