Proponents of Garibaldi at Squamish, the proposed ski area at Brohm Ridge, formally submitted their plan to the province’s Environmental Assessment Office Dec. 22. The period for public comment on the project will begin Jan. 12. The Environmental Assessment Act requires detailed plans for any projects that exceed a "threshold" size, including mines, industrial developments or tourism developments, such as ski areas. Detailed analysis of environmental impacts are included in the plan, which will be available at local libraries. Garibaldi at Squamish proponents will hold open houses in Squamish, Whistler, Pemberton and West Vancouver in the new year. A late addition to the entertainment lineup this weekend is David Johanns and the Beattie Street Jazz Trio, playing in the Chateau Whistler’s Mallard Bar Dec. 26 and 27. The trio, which includes bass, drums and piano, play between 4 and 6 p.m. and again between 9 and 11 p.m. each day. Drop in Drama returns to Anasazi on Monday, Jan. 12. Participants meet at 8 p.m. and reading begins at 9. The readings are from Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City, as scripted by Stewart Glen. Audience members are welcome. Former Vancouver Canucks and Vancouver Grizzlies owner Arthur Griffiths — and the man spearheading a drive to bring the 2010 Winter Olympics to Vancouver and Whistler — has opened a 50,000 square foot leisure centre in Richmond. With a brew pub, high-tech bowling, 12-screen theatre and a White Spot restaurant, Griffiths expects to draw 3 million visitors in 1998. That, he says, will make his complex the biggest destination for family entertainment in B.C. "Bigger than Whistler/Blackcomb and bigger than GM Place."
