The Beanie Babies auction at Bear Pause has raised $2,308 for the Jennifer Jones Whistler Bear Foundation and Michael Allen’s research of Whistler’s black bears. Six Princess Beanie Babies and a Roots Athletics Olympic cap, signed by gold medalist Ross Rebagliati, were auctioned off over the Easter weekend. The Jennifer Jones Whistler Bear Foundation uses its resources to help prevent conflicts between Whistler’s human and bear populations, including funding black bear resercher Michael Allen’s work. The Foundation is also a member of the Whistler Bear Task team. Bear Pause accepted bids from as far away as Seattle by phone and fax. Under the G... The action was fast and furious at the one-night all-ages bingo heaven called Myrtle Philip Elementary School, April 16, as $1,450 was raised to help send Gerhard Reimer's Grade 4/5 class to Victoria. Thirty games were attended by up to 200 at the peak of the action, spilling bingo fans into the second half of the school gym to hear the letters being called. "We started with seats for 120," Reimer says. Games were mixed — four corners, fill a line, etc. — to keep interest high. "We had a lot of great door prizes," Reimer says, wishing to thank the many merchants who donated them. This is the second time the teacher has organized a family bingo night. The pupils will spend a few days starting April 27 exploring the B.C. legislature, the Royal B.C. Museum, picnic in Beaconhill Park, visit Victoria's harbour and historic downtown buildings and take in the Cowichan Native Village. The event is on the rooftop Woodlands Terrace. A buffet starts at 11:30 a.m., followed by the choir at 12:30 p.m. Capacity is 400, but tickets at $34.95 (adult), and $17.50 (child) are expected to go quickly.
